The international peer-reviewed journal South Asian Review invites submissions to a special issue revolving around “South Asian Graphic Narratives” for its Winter 2018 issue. Graphic narratives across South Asia’s multiple languages arguably have a long history, from the colonial to the contemporary moment. From comics appearing in colonial publications to the Amar Chitra Katha series and more recent graphic novels published across South Asia, graphic narratives constitute a rich archive as well as medium for examining history, culture, identity, place, pleasure, and community in South Asia. We welcome contributions on graphic narratives on any topic, and across the many linguistic traditions of South Asia; some possible topics include:
-contemporary graphic novels and art comics;
-print history of Indian comics or graphic narratives;
-the rise of the South Asian graphic novel;
-comics and graphic narratives that address nationalism;
-eco-critical approaches;
-gender and/or sexuality in graphic narratives;
-the aesthetics of South Asian graphic narratives;
-the role of publishing houses and/or fan communities;
-diaspora and identity in graphic narratives.
Please email an abstract (of 500-700 words) and a brief biographical note to Kavita Daiya (kdaiya@gwu.edu) no later than Feb 28, 2018. Final essays expected to be 20-30 pages; draft essays due May 1, 2018. All submissions will be peer-reviewed; if accepted, final revised essays will be due no later than Oct 1, 2018.
